Sequel: Mr Shadow

After the success of The Fifth Element, earning $263,920,180 at the worldwide box office, many people were expecting a sequel, but in the 12 years since the films release, nothing has been set in motion or even hinted at during the last decade.

Luc Besson’s original 400 page story was obviously too long to be made into a film, and would have cost $145million, an extremely high cost at the time. Besson, with Robert Mark Kamen, split the script into 2 parts. The first half was rewritten into a film-able 120 page treatment, with advice from Barry Josephson, who was in charge of production at Columbia Pictures. The ending was also changed, so that the film didn’t have the “to be continued” feel at the end.

So what do we know about the sequel? Apart from knowing that Besson has the second film all planned out, the only thing is the films early title, Mr Shadow. As you probably know, Mr Shadow is the name of the dark planet that was originally defeated in The Fifth Element. How the character is involved in the sequel is anyone’s guess. Maybe, one day, Besson will tell this story, either through film, a book, comics or an animated feature.
